The Barossa Valley vineyard landscape is remarkably diverse. Fortunate to have mates growing grapes all over this place, Kym Teusner and Mick Page are able to make different wines showcasing many faces of Barossa Valley Shiraz. Named after the legendary, multifaceted Roger Bilmore! The Bilmore Shiraz is sourced primarily from vineyards along the western ridge of the Valley floor…an area stretching south of Seppeltsfield Road, around the back of the golf club at Rowland Flat and then on through the parish of Gomersal that overlooks the southern township of Lyndoch. Shiraz grown in these parts produces richly flavoured wines with soft, round mouth feel and plenty of delicious savoury characters…the trademark of wines from this part of the Barossa Valley. - Kym Teusner Good colour, a rich, fruit-slapping mouthful that draws you swiftly back for a second mouthful, and in no time the bottle is empty, especially if you have shared it with another. The finish is remarkable, light and almost airy, yet with a savoury note that serves to highlight the fruit. Drink to: 2039; 96 Points - James Halliday Wine Companion The wine is a glass and teeth staining deep, dark, inky purple with youthful bright hues. A dark yet fragrant nose of dark cherry and plum; blackberry and aniseed with savoury notes of earth and oak. Line this up blind against any super premium Barossa Shiraz and it screams top shelf. The medium to full bodied palate first shows power with layer upon layer of complex, deep, dark fruit. Lashings of it. Then elegance courtesy of a finish that ties this gorgeous fruit to the textured, savoury ending. Unbelievably approachable now, the fruit and structure here will carry it for another decade at least.

Unsurprisingly for Kym Teusner and Mick Page, beer played a major role in their decision to start Teusner Wines in 2001. Overhearing a couple of grape growers at the pub contemplating removing their 85 year old Grenache vines, Kym and Mick stepped up to the plate and offered them 4 times what they’d been paid by ‘the big guys’ for the crop if they’d keep the vineyard in the ground. The offer was accepted, the vines stayed in the ground, Teusner Wines came to life with a singular mission –  to make the kind of wines they liked to drink!

In the winery, a lot faith is placed in having a set of human eyes and hands (and sometimes feet) on the job…believing that having a person with a feel for what is and isn’t working will win out over a machine any day. Everything is crushed one small picking bin at a time, which makes for plenty of long days at the peak of vintage. At all times the focus is on keeping close watch to ensure everything – colour, flavour, aroma and structure – is as it should be, whilst taking it easy with the oak to let the righteous flavours found in old Barossa vineyards take center stage in the wines.
